DESCRIPTION

The trail connects Lake Gutierrez with Lake Mascardi, and it is a portion of the “Vuriloches Trail”, a traverse with a high historical and cultural content. The original inhabitants, the arrival of the first Europeans from what is now Chile, the religious missions from the Jesuit order and the work done by the Border Limits Commission led by Francisco Pascasio Moreno are some of the main historical events.

From a geographical aspect, this trail crosses a flat area called the “continental divide” or “watershed”. On one side the hydrographic basin including the Gutierrez and Nahuel Huapi lakes heading out to the Atlantic along the Limay and Rio Negro rivers, and on the other side, the Mascardi and Steffen lakes heading to the pacific along the Manso and Puelo rivers.

From North to South the trail starts at the Baqueanos campground on the southern end of the Gutierrez lake. It takes internal vehicle roads, then out to Route 40 and along to the Park Rangers Office “Los Maitenes”, where you will find a road heading to the Mascardi lake and the Relmu Lafquen campground belonging to the Mapuche community “Wiritray”. Very interesting to meet them to know a little about their history and culture.

You can also reach Los Baqueanos starting from Villa los Coihues, and passing Muñoz Beach, along the way.

You can also reach Relmu Lafquen starting at Los Césares passing Llum lagoon, on the way. This a backpack trip considered a little harder.

To improve the trekking experience, it is recommended to contact a Mountain Guide authorized by the AAGM (Argentine Association of Mountain Guides)
